Night cream is an essential part of skincare

Many women struggle to keep their skin healthy amidst the growing level of pollution. While we are all aware of the importance of day-moisturisers and sunscreens, night creams are often ignored.

However, they are not to be taken lightly. After a day full of sun exposure and filth, a good night cream helps in getting rid of the chemical barriers and soothes the skin providing additional moisture.

According to IANS, beauty expert of cosmetic brand Bottega Di Lungavita, Tisha Kapur Khurana, says that a night cream should definitely be incorporated in skincare regime as it helps skin appear fresh and younger. “Most of us are not aware of the fact that night creams contain ingredients like retinol and AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) fruit acids that fight wrinkles and fine lines. As we grow older, collagen production in the body declines, which leads to sagging and wrinkled skin,” she said.

“Application of a good night cream stimulates collagen production and helps the skin look and feel younger. It not only nourishes and revitalises your skin, but also treats pigmentation, age spots, wrinkles, fine lines and acne,” she added.

When your skin starts feeling patchy, dull or dry, it’s an indication that you should start using a night cream. While these signs help to decide when to start using it, choosing the right one is another task.

“When you are in your 20s, choose a cream that contains natural ingredients like aloe vera, honey and other essential oils. For those in their 30s, creams with active ingredients like amino acids, ceramides, retinol and other antioxidants are recommended,” said Khurana.

For women in their 40s, Khurana suggests it’s better to invest in creams that contain peptides, soy extract and vitamins. “Your night cream should be able to fight puffiness, wrinkles and pigmentation. For women in their 50s and 60s, it is important to select a night cream that is best suited for old and mature skin, which gives extra moisture and keeps your skin healthy all day long,” she explained.

For visible results, she advises to apply cream half an hour before you go to bed. “Wash your face with a gentle cleanser. Then take some cream on your fingers and apply gently in an upward stroke with a circular motion. Never forget to apply the cream around your neck. This is the place where the ageing lines are most visible,” she emphasised.

According to the New York Times, certain compounds found in night creams help improve the skin’s overall appearance. By halting damage caused by the sun, antioxidants like idebenone, vitamin E, coenzyme Q and green tea may help prevent new wrinkles from forming, said Dr Leslie Baumann, professor of dermatology at the University of Miami and author of The Skin Type Solution. Retinol found in several night creams is the only scientific ingredient that can help counter wrinkles. “It’s the only thing that treats wrinkles you already have,” Dr. Baumann said.

According to The Guardian, the top six night creams are:

Eucerin Anti-Ageing Hyaluron Filler Night Cream

Olay Regenerist All Night Recovery Cream

Frankincense Revitalising Night Cream

Proactiv Solution Repairing Night Lotion

Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream

The Body Shop Vitamin E Night Cream
