Trend File: Go gamine with a pixie crop

The internet nearly halted its virtual presses last week, when everybody and their mothers’ darling Jennifer Lawrence debuted a freshly chopped off frou in a post on her Facebook page.

While she may have been the most talked about, she certainly wasn’t the only one to do so last week. Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Hudson and Pamela Anderson made the same celeb rite of passage and took a pair of scissors to their enviable heads of Hollywood hair. In the past year alone, Rihanna, Beyonce,  Charlize Theron, Halle Berry, Miley Cyrus, Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway Gul Panag and Mandira Bedi have gone the whimsical route of the youthful pixie crop. A look back over the last 50 years shows that there has always been at least one iconic head of hair every decade flaunting this style statement. The trend has yet to permeate into Pakistani salons, and we couldn’t wait till Kate Middleton made the move to PixieTown, so we felt it was best to lay out a few reasons that might finally give you the courage you need to make that cut.

1.  It shows off a strong jaw line or delicate bone structure like nobody’s business (see: Rihanna). If you have a heart-shaped face, it will be able to pull off any manner of pixie cut (see: Anne Hathaway). If you have a long face or a bigger forehead, it should be softer and swept off the face (See: Jennifer Lawrence).

2.  It’s not a fad. It’s been around since the days of Hepburn and Monroe. With a short crop you’ll join the ranks of Edie Sedgwik, Twiggy, Mia Farrow, Madonna, Linda Evangelista, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Moss and Natalie Portman.

3.  It’s as low maintenance as it gets. Think of all the time you’ll save on blow-drying in the morning and you’ll free up space on the bathroom counter once you toss out your dry shampoos, volumising mousse and curl sprays.

4.  It’s versatile. With a little styling, it can be edgy or chic.

5.  It adds volume to otherwise lackluster hair. If your hair lacks bounce or body, and is too fine to hold heat styling, this may be the perfect cut for you.

6.  It will give you a new lease on life. Case in point, Charlize Theron: “It’s the most freeing thing, I highly recommend it. I think every woman should do it.”

7.  It’s. Not. Permanent. It will eventually grow out and you can tout it up to your ‘rebellious and experimental’ phase.
