With the Academy Awards nearly 17 days away, pre-Oscars festivities are in full swing, but many celebrities’ fashion sense doesn’t seem to be keeping up with the pace. We blame award season fatigue for the fact that at the 86th Academy Awards Nominees Luncheon, while some of our favourite celebs looked understated and fabulous, some seemed to be out to lunch (pun intended) as far as their fashion choices were concerned.
Here’s a round-up of the who’s who of Hollywood and the yays and nays about their looks.
Kristen Bell
The actor-singer wore a Prada Spring 2014 midnight blue square-neckline dress with a 50s silhouette. The polka-dot-and-floral print was a safe but good pick for an event of this nature. The Veronica Mars star carried a Prada Saffiano Small Gardener’s Tote Bag in blue, which although not our favourite, complements her outfit well. Of course, we love her Prada nude pumps that can make all things fashion look fab. She accessorised with Anita Ko ‘Spike’ earrings. Her hair could’ve used some bounce and body, but a big thumps up for her make-up choices – mascara and watermelon lip colour.
Amy Adams
Wolf whistle! The American Hustle star opted for a trouser ensemble instead of the predictable pretty little dress. She wore an all-scarlet outfit from Elie Saab’s Resort 2014 collection. She sported the wide-leg trousers with a matching blouse with grace. She gave her look the finishing touches with Christian Louboutin shoes (not visible in the photograph), to-die-for loose waves, and nude make-up. Amy, whether you win an Oscar or not, you’re certainly one of the frontrunners in our list of fashion stars.
Cate Blanchett
Oh, Cate! As much as we adore you in Blue Jasmine, we can’t get ourselves to like your space age metallic silver dress. It’s so 2013! The dress that she wore is an asymmetrical one from the Prada Fall 2013 collection. The actor fittingly accessorised with Christian Louboutin ‘So Kate’ pumps and kept her make-up to a bare minimum. We aren’t crazy about the side-swept up-do. We’re disappointed!
Lupita Nyong’o
The dazzling star, who has enslaved us with her fashion choices this awards season, failed to wow us at the event. We like the lilac Christian Dior Spring 2014 satin sleeveless dress that she wore, but she has set the fashion bar way too high for us to be content with her merely looking ‘nice’. She styled the bold orange glycines print dress with a purple Judith Leiber Couture minaudière and velvet Paul Andrew shoes (not our favourite). She further accessorised with Christian Dior ‘Mise en Dior’ blue earrings and a Sandy Leong ring. Her flawless skin looked radiant and she wore an earthy, peach-coloured glossy colour on her lips.
Sandra Bullock
The stunning actor’s fashion choices this season haven’t been knockouts, but this look is risky and we like it. She wore a gorgeous Stella McCartney Spring 2014 strapless dress with a metallic floral bodice. Her ensemble included a black lace skirt with a red-and-white waistband. The Miss Congeniality star sported a congenial and flirty look with a red Roger Vivier ‘Pilgrim de Luxe’ clutch and Brian Atwood ‘Tamara’ strappy sandals. She opted for the dark-eyes-light-lips look, which we like. The black nail colour added edginess to her avatar. We are not fans of her back-combed up-do. Perhaps, a twirly side chignon would’ve elevated the finesse of her outfit.
