Snoop Lion and Psy take it up a notch
Korean pop star Psy of Gangam Style fame is back with a new song called Hangover. Accompanied by rap artiste Snoop Lion (formerly known as Snoop Dogg), this music video is about, as the title suggests, being hung over and the side effects of imbibing great quantities of alcohol. Other than crass, the song is, well, lame. It looks like Psy’s 2013 single Gentleman, except this time, Psy is partying with Snoop Lion, guzzling down booze and swimming in a pool. Yawn.
Verdict: Odd
Lady Gaga hits a new low with a gross music video
After wearing a meat dress, copying Madonna and participating in a stunt with a ‘vomit’ artist, Lady Gaga has hit an all-time low by joining hands with ‘predators’, Terry Richardson and R Kelly. Richardson is an American fashion and portrait photographer, who has shot campaigns for fashion heavyweights including Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford. Terry has also been making headlines for allegedly coercing models into performing sexual acts. A string of former models have come forward with these allegations, but Terry’s PR machine is selling it as subversive art. He’s also the man behind the music video of Miley Cyrus’ Wrecking Ball. Sadly, for all that negative press, the New York magazine swung into action and gave Mr Richardson a clean chit. The much talked-about cover story reads more like an effort to discredit all those who came forward and could come forward in the future — a takedown piece, if you will. Meanwhile, Kelly, who was acquitted on charges of child pornography, circa 2008, is still detestable. There are clips and interviews, which make the case against Kelly in many ways. Hint: Google the late singer Aaliyah. So, given their ‘charming’ collective history, it is slightly surprising that Gaga agreed to do a music video with this ‘dream team’. The song, Do What U Want, is described as an ‘ad for rape’ with some horrific imagery and disturbing lyrics for good measure. Did Gaga just endorse criminal behaviour? You bet, but there’s no comment from her camp, so far.
Verdict: Creepy, offensive and possibly criminal
Thelma & Louise flash a smile
It has been more than 20 years since Ridley Scott’s Thelma & Louise, but they don’t make ‘em like Susan Sarandon anymore. The iconic image of Thelma and Louise, played by Susan and Geena Davis respectively, is juxtaposed with a new picture of the two actors, setting the internet world ablaze. Susan Sarandon, 67, took to Twitter and wrote, “Inventors of the #selfie at it again. #ThelmaAndLouise.” Take that, Kimye! The film fetched Oscar nominations and helped launching an actor we now know as Brad Pitt.
Verdict: Coolest Instagram picture since the Ellen DeGenres and co selfie at the Oscars.
Björk gets a nod from Moma, David Cronenberg exhibition lands in Amsterdam
New York’s Museum of Modern Art (Moma) is all set to host a Björk retrospective in 2015. In case you’ve missed out on Björk’s diverse talents, she is the Icelandic pop dynamo with a career spanning over two decades. She has many brilliant, experimental and innovative records to her credit. With her stints in sound, music, acting and production, Björk is in a league of her own. “Björk is an extraordinarily innovative artiste,” said Klaus Biesenbach, chief curator at Moma. “This highly experimental exhibition offers visitors a direct experience of her hugely collaborative body of work.” The other man of the hour is controversial filmmaker David Cronenberg, who is being honoured in Amsterdam by Eye Film Institute. Describing the exhibit in detail on its website, the institute stated, “David Cronenberg – The Exhibition explores Cronenberg’s world through the key themes of his films: the physical and psychological transformation of his characters. The highlights of the exhibition comprise important objects and attributes from Cronenberg’s films including photos, audiovisual fragments, artwork, set design and props.”
Verdict: Cool cats
