As Ramazan nears its end, families revel in pre-Eid fervour. A burning (pun intended) question for women this scorching July is what to wear that is both airy and looks fabulous. Given the heat, dressing up in elaborate outfits is uncomfortable and certainly inapt for a summer Eid. This Eidul Fitr, The Express Tribune sits down with fashion heavyweight Deepak Perwani to get his take on what constitutes the ideal Eid outfit.
The season dictates lighter cotton fabrics as the likely choice for Eid outfits. Perwani’s Eid collection comes in three ranges: screen print, block print and digital print cottons with light embroidery, semi formals comprising lightly embellished chiffons, and formals with embellished and embroidered outfits that can be worn to wedding events as well. “With the weather these days, one cannot make do with just one outfit,” say Perwani. “Thus, I have come out with different ranges.”
Perwani’s collection is coherent in how it offers clothes that go heavier from daytime to nighttime. According to the designer, daytime is more suitable for wearing light kurtas, which have a classic silhouette that is lightly embellished to complement the festiveness of Eid. He suggests that it is better to opt for slightly formal wear for occasions such as family dinners, and since many people like to be indoors during dinner time on Eid, more formal outfits can be worn.
With the wedding season to gain momentum soon, the Eid shopping list should include clothes that can be donned at dholkis and other wedding events. “For this reason, I have come out with a more formal ready-to-wear line as well, which can be worn to dholkis and weddings of distant relatives and friends.” The Eid collection is priced between Rs4,500 and Rs50,000.
Perwani’s design house was ranked number six in the world and number one in the Middle East by the International Bulgarian Fashion Awards (BFA). “We have received 4 awards from them so far and the rest will be announced within the week,” he shares.
Nominees and winners at the BFA include design houses such as Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera and Yumi Katsura. “We have won the Social Worldwide Award for support of charitable initiatives and causes,” says Perwani. For creating the largest kurta in the world, the BFA is commissioning a robot figure of Perwani, which will be placed in the International Fashion Museum in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
