The mighty Ragnar Lothbrok is set to strike Paris as History Channel’s Vikings has been renewed for a third season. The popular television series, which will return with a 10-episode-long third season, will be packed with action and even better visual effects, reported the Huffington Post.

On what the audiences can expect from the upcoming season, Vikings creator Michael Hirst said that fans are in for a visual treat. The production team has decided to up the ante with CGI and visual effects, as the characters’ are galvanised into action as part of their quest for the Paris expedition.

“We’re going to attack Paris. Paris was the most extraordinary city. It was still a Roman city and was like nothing else on earth. Presently, we’re just building on that on the backlot,” said Hirst. “The show will also feature CGI.  Ragnar attacked Paris with one hundred ships. We just get bigger and better,” he added.

Hirst also hinted at several new subplots for the upcoming season, even going as far to reveal that “Erlendur has been impressed by the idea of going to farm in England. And, in his pocket, he has a handful of mud, earth from England.” He added, “When Ragnar sees him with this handful of dirt, he knows that he’s thinking along the same lines, that they’re connected in some way. So, he spares him. But, of course, that turns out to be a terrible decision in the end.”

The cast of the show will include some new faces, such as British actor Jennie Jacques, who will be portraying Judith, daughter of King Aelle, reported deadline.com, an online magazine. In a stunning turn of events, one major character is expected to die this season.

Actor Katheryn Winnick revealed that the Canadian-Irish history-based drama will lose quite a few characters this year. “Some beloved characters and some amazing characters [will die], so [there has been a little bit of] mourning on the Vikings set. But I’m telling you, it’s going to be amazing this year,” she said, reported kpopstz.com.

Vikings is inspired by the sagas of Viking Ragnar Lothbrok, one of the best-known mythological Norse heroes and notorious for scourging England and France. It portrays Ragnar as a former farmer who rises to fame by successful raids of England with the support of his family and fellow warriors. Those pivotal to his success are his brother Rollo, his son Bjorn, and his wives the shield maiden Lagertha and princess Aslaug.

Being aired since 2013, the series has received generally favourable reviews from critics. The third season of the show is expected to air sometime in 2015.
