Fashion-forward: To new beginnings

KARACHI: 

Fashion Pakistan (FP) proposed a platform dedicated to budding designers, putting together their launch as the next generation of Pakistan’s fashion talent. FP teamed up with Maybelline, New York to promote the flair of Pakistan’s newbie fashionistas. The show was held at IVS, Karachi. The young designers talk about the inspiration behind their collections.

Name: Aalish

Collection title: Royal Soccer

Key Inspiration: “From georgette, to chiffon, to silk, to jersey, to leather collection, it was monochromatic collection consisting of white, black and grey; and thinking of royalty, picked up brown and gold for it to go with it. A complete women’s wear collection per se.”

Trend alert: The collection comprised of leather jackets, ponchos, drape gowns and jumpsuits.

The look: Rebellious royalty

Name: Nitasha Yaqub

Collection title: Vanishing Culture

Key Inspiration: “Anglo Indians community, mixed breed of the people titled as the Brown Ma’am-sahib who would travel to London, for finery and good stocks but were sadly left behind when their better halves fled from their land of origin, England, at the time of partition. It’s a tribute to that community that is rarely remembered. These people are not remembered by anyone, today and hence, the community died out, with a few residing in Goa, Karachi and Lahore.”

Trend alert: 1940s and 1950s fashion. Silk embroideries with floral prints in linings, a vintage collection that’s reversible, for one to wear either ways.

The look: Classic glam of yester years

Name: Sameer Sain

Collection title: Denimology

Key Inspiration: “When we think of winters, we think of denim. But there is not much of a variety here in the country to offer from. Neither is there variety nor are there colours.  Also, how wearable they are is not taken into consideration. So, to bring forward my collection, I toyed with the idea of denim with jute.”

Trend alert: Completely western men’s wear, varying from shades of light to royal blue; includes patch-work, some block-printing too with zips, to create the look of a stronger macho male.

The look: Man of Steel

Name: Abel Emanuel

Collection title: Hebrew Calligraphy & Henna Art

Key Inspiration: “Hebrew letters that inspired me, and with designs of henna motif, that have always inspired me greatly.”

Trend alert: Variation of garments from saris to gowns, to cocktail dresses, and jump-suits, there was a variety to see from. A complete women’s collection; chiffon’s, velvet and silks were the main fabrics for this Luxury Prêt collection.

The look: Chic woman

Name: Madiha Raza

Collection title: Flight of Birds

Key Inspiration: “I chose tropical birds from the global world, textures and feel of the colours came from there. It helped me develop a sound collection; my colours include red, orange, blue, green, yellow, red and white.”

Trend alert: Exotic and chic combined. Layer cut, digital print and layering, in fusion collection from Eastern wear on Western silhouettes. Jump-suits, to ghararas, to sari to skirts everything mostly got incorporated in the collection. Fabrics used were was silk, chiffon, organza, net and leather.

The look: Exotic appeal
