Actor Sonali Bendre has stepped foot in television with Ajeeb Daastaan Hai Ye, for which she has opted for a simple look, contrary to the quintessential flamboyant ethnic wear seen in Indian television dramas. Donning kurtis with jeans and scarves, Sonali said her choice of attire is to make her character look as real as possible and give her a more grounded look, reported the Indian Express.

In the forthcoming show by Balaji Telefilms, which will go on air on Life OK, Sonali essays the role of Shobha, who is initially a housewife and is forced to step into the professional world after her husband is put behind bars. “She starts with saris, but Ekta had a clear vision. When she (the character) begins working, we wanted a shift of look. Wearing churidars (with kurtas) was also limiting. We wanted the character to look more practical,” said Sonali.

The actor, who has previously starred in notable films such as Hum Saath Saath Hain, Duplicate and Sarfarosh, stated that it would have been difficult to play a working woman who wears saris. “We wanted to give her (the character) something that’s quick to wear. We are trying to make it as real as we can and wearing jeans with kurtis and scarves worked out,” she shared.

The look for Sonali’s character has been designed by a budding designer, Anamika. “What my character wears is something that I have even seen on the road. This is probably more believable,” she said. The show, which also features Apurva Agnihotri, will go on air on Tuesday.
